I went from having no 1/2 inch drive sockets to ALL OF THEM.

Kinja'd!!!

This is an 84 piece 1/2 drive socket set from Tekton, which is a smallish brand that I’m somewhat fond of. They seem to be a step above Harbor Freight, their screwdrivers and some pliers are made in America, and their stuff is generally quite good.

I was looking for a nice 1/2 drive set, because all the 1/2 drive sockets sets I found really weren’t much larger than my 3/8 drive stuff. My 3/8 drive tops out at 1 inch and 22mm, this set goes all the way to 1 5/16 and 32mm. Here’s what a 32mm deep socket looks like:

Kinja'd!!!

Big sumbitch. I don’t care about the ratchet (which is nice!) or the breaker bar, really. But for the price I paid they’re basically free.

Amazon sells this set for $195, and for $195 it’s a pretty nice damn set. When I was going to buy it they had two sets in their Warehouse Deals section, one in ‘ like-new’ condition for $160 and one in merely ‘acceptable’ for $120. I took a chance on the acceptable one, hoping no pieces were missing, but in typical Amazon fashion they understated the condition. No missing pieces, it all looks new, one of the four latches on the case is missing.

I couldn’t care less about the case, because I picked up these beauties from Westling Machine:

Kinja'd!!!

Billet aluminum socket trays, $119 with sizes etched on them. Only problem is the studs aren’t magnetic, so I bought magnet discs that I’ll glue to the studs. I might have to pick up another one (they sell individual trays)  for the really big 1/2 drive stuff, but it’s a pretty good setup that’ll work nice in my tool cart.

Are they all 10mm? Might almost have enough if they are.

I’ve got 10mm in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive, shallow and deep, plus a few extra and even an impact socket. I still need more.

That’s a really nice set . I’ve never heard of Tekton. I’ll try to remember it. I really do care about the case. I have a 72 pc Craftsman set I bought loose back when , and then got a separate case for. B ut it’s not as good as having them come in their own case, I think.

Bastard I bough t the 58 piece like a month ago because the 84 piece was out of stock indefinitely.

Guess I just have to get another one lol.

Nice score. I have a Tekton torque wrench that I like, though my dad went to use it (it’s at his house with my project car) and he says it’s busted. I’ll have to check it out the next time I’m over there.

Tekton’s all right in my book. I broke one of their gear pullers on a REALLY stuck axle hub, but no problems as of yet with their regular hand tools.

They’re based here in Michigan, which is probably why I’ve been seeing Tekton products at different stores around here. Even Meijer (a Walmart-like department store popular in the midwest, for those unfamiliar) carries them.

Very nice!! I’m a big fan of Tekton and just bought this set myself a few weeks ago. I had it in my Amazon cart for a while and it finally dropped to ~$142 and I bit. It’s an impressive set and pushed me to buy the 3/8" and 1/4" sets as well. No more searching endlessly for misplaced sockets! Ratchet on my friend...

I looked at the 58 piece, but it had the small stuff and not the big stuff when the big stuff was the main draw for me. I almost bought Harbor Freight stuff but their range is from like 12-24mm and my 3/8 set covers up to 22mm, so I may as well have just bought a single 24mm socket.

Watch the used ones on Amazon. At full price I think it’s a great set, for the $120 it was an absolute steal.

I’m definitely a Tekton fan.  This set is made in Taiwan, but Spyderco sells knives made there , so I think those cats in Taiwan know their way around a forge. It’s definitely at least as nice as my Craftsman stuff, and that’s the last of the made in USA Craftsman. They also have a lifetime warranty, you just take a picture of what broke and they send you a new one.

If you don’t have a dedicated tool chest and whatnot, the case is important. This case isn’t perfect , the shallow stuff isn’t really held in and there’s just a bit of cardboard there to separate them, but it’s solid and feels like it won’t break easily. Doesn’t matter to me at all, but it’s high quality if  you find yourself buying a set.

It really feels like a very good quality set. If I didn’t already have decent  quality 1/4 and 3/8 stuff (USA made Craftsman sockets), I’d definitely fill out my box with Tekton.

I wish I had space for a dedicated work bench. Instead, I have a multi drawer tool chest in the garage, but I end up taking the tools out of it and moving to whatever location with them.  It’d sure be nice if I could arrange my sockets in a drawer like you have.

I’ve actually got mine in a mechanic’s cart in the shed, which isn’t ideal, haha. I’ve got a cheap HF 3/8  set I’ll keep in the house for small stuff, but if I have to work on the trucks I’ll drive them out behind the house to the shed.

I’ll hang onto it, it seems good,  but I’ve got a 24” breaker bar from HF that’s really nice, and a 14” SK one that’s the best breaker bar I’ve ever seen...it’s got a 1/2 square drive in the end of its handle so you can use it as an extension too. One of those really simple things that makes you wonder why they don’t all have that.

TBH I bought it for the breaker bar lol. I already had everything metric up to 24mm but it wasn’t in a nice case. My 1/2" drive craftsman wrench has seen better days as well. I will probably end up getting the bigger kit because you can’t have too many tools.
